WLB debutant and Scottish football aficionado Gerry Taylor (@thefurlongpole) delivers his verdict on the Top Goalscorer market in the Scottish Premiership, picking out his best pre-season bets for the 2020/21 campaign.
WLB Season Preview 2020/21 | Scottish Premiership: Top Goalscorer
The Scottish Premiership Top Goalscorer market looks a very volatile one going into the 2020/21 season. With the longer transfer window, there is a fair amount of uncertainty and speculation regarding players at the top of the betting.
Eighteen goals can sometimes be enough to make you top striker in this league, so it’s worth trying to search out some each-way value, especially so with players who should remain in the Premiership and start most weeks.
Christian Doidge (14/1 Bet365)
After a very quiet scoring spell when he joined Hibs, Doidge scored 16 goals in his last 23 games over a six-month spell. If he continues where he left off, he’d be a strong contender at the odds on offer.
Ryan Christie (33/1 Coral)
Providing Ryan Christie stays injury-free and doesn’t depart Celtic during the season, he looks a shoe-in for plenty of goals once again, having scored 15 in all competitions last term.
Lyndon Dykes (66/1 Ladbrokes)
Should Alfredo Morelos leave Rangers in the near future, perhaps the Ibrox club will take a punt on Lyndon Dykes? He has proven a handful for most defences, including Celtic. in the last season or so.
If he remains with Livvy, the 24-year-old, (who is on the verge of an international call up) still looks guaranteed to get into double figures.
Callum Hendry (125/1 Bet365)
Callum Hendry is a young striker who would’ve been gutted that last season was curtailed prematurely in March. He was in red-hot form and his goals were the main reason St Johnstone grabbed sixth place.
Only 22, he is only going to get better, so it’s safe to assume there are plenty more goals to come from Callum.
Ross Stewart (250/1 William Hill)
Granted it’s a speculative pick, but the price is just way too big on Ross Stewart.
Injured for a couple of months of last term, Ross still cleaned up with all the club’s Player of the Year awards last season. The tall, quick 24-year-old scored 11 league and cup goals in his shortened campaign, and with further expected development and some rumoured interest from Aberdeen, he could be a lively outsider in a wide open market.
