WLB Season Preview 2019/20 | League One: Specials

EFL fan Tom Love (@TomLove_18) has scoured the dozens of League One specials markets and shared his best bets ahead of the 2019/20 big kick-off.

Peterborough to be the Highest Scoring Team (7/1 William Hill)

This is a bet I’ve had my eye on for a while. There was some 11/1 about it a few weeks back but that’s understandably long gone, although there’s still mileage in the current quote.

Peterborough are notorious for their exciting, attack-minded team and that’s even more the case this season with the additions Darren Ferguson has made over the summer. With the likes of Ivan Toney, Marcus Maddison, Matt Godden and Siriki Dembele already in situ, Posh have added the likes of Mo Eisa, as well as the classy Serhat Tasdemir to their armoury.

It may look a bit top heavy, and I’m not expecting their defence to keep many clean sheets, but one thing Posh should get is goals. And lots of them. In my eyes, Peterborough should be the favourites in the market so the 7/1 available (William Hill) does still make a strong degree of appeal.

What’s more, the fruitful recruitment strategy at London Road is to bring in attackers who can flourish in such a forward-thinking system, get plenty of goals to enhance their value and then be sold on for a decent profit. There’s no way they’re going to move away from that ethos – they’ll be positive in every game, and looking at the rest of the division, it’s hard to find an attacking arsenal of the same standard.

Doncaster to finish in the bottom-half (11/8 SkyBet)

Last season Doncaster were probably one of the surprise play-off finishers under Grant McCann but were eventually outdone in the semi-finals. Since then a lot has changed at the Keepmoat with McCann moving on to pastures new; Darren Moore has come in and I think the majority of football fans felt he was harshly sacked by West Brom last term.

Maybe it was hard to gauge just how good Moore’s credentials were in that role. He had a strong squad with plenty of Premier League quality at his disposal and he probably kept them about par. A lot of murmurings suggested Moore wasn’t the bright ideas man either, with his collective backroom staff working well together.

If that didn’t test his managerial ability, this job certainly will. Donny have lost influential centre-half Andy Butler, the lively Malik Wilks has signed for local rivals Barnsley and captain Tommy Rowe has departed. John Marquis is still about but he too could be off before the end of the transfer window – he’s done enough to get a gig in the Championship.

Incomings have been at a premium and Doncaster do look significantly weaker than last year. It will be interesting to see if Rovers can make any significant signings but I think the bookies are rating them off last season’s campaign and it’s a much different look this time round. The 11/8 for Rovers to finish in the bottom half looks a decent bet.
