PRO PUNTER Dino Vita (@VitaDino) highlights the value from Scotland’s League One in 2016/17.
Scottish League One 2016/17
Scotland’s League One is very competitive this season. There’s no runaway winner (like Dunfermline in 2015/16) this time around…
Recently relegated Alloa and Livingston will be the main contenders, for me. Both sides have had massive changeovers in personal during the close season.
Livi have kept last season’s top scorer Liam Buchanan on their books, which could be the difference this season, as having a proven goal-getter at this level is massive.
Alloa got their business done early in the summer and their Betfred Cup results have shown they mean business – four wins in their League Cup section including beating and knocking out holders Ross County shows they have a team to fear.
Re-signing Greg Spence looks excellent business by Alloa and he’s started the season well with three goals in four games.
Elsewhere, Peterhead will be hoping they can find the form of last season and go one better. They went 19 games unbeaten at one point during the campaign before eventually losing out to promotion winning Ayr in the play-off semis.
In Rory McCalister Peterhad have a striker that will score plenty of goals so if the can keep it tight at the back, they’ll have a real chance of promotion.
Stranraer and Airdrie may surprise the top-three but I think it’ll be a straight fight between these two for the last play-off spot, as it was last season with Stranraer sneaking it on the final day.
Albion Rovers, East Fife and Brechin should all have enough to stay clear of the relegation fight and will hope to push for play-off spots but mid-table is all the three can realistically hope for.
Queens Park and Stenhousemuir will have tough seasons – Stenny avoided the play-off spot by one point last season and haven’t started well this time around with four straight defeats in their League Cup pool.
I feel Stenny could be the basement boys this season and don’t have much hope for them avoiding relegation.
