DO more sides suffer back-to-back relegations these days? Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) took a look at the stats.

WLB Analysis | The Rise Of Back To Back Relegations

There’s been a spate of back to back relegations in recent seasons, I was keen to see if this was normal or more than usual.

1990’s

  • 1994/95: Swindon Town
  • 1997/98: Southend United

2000’s

  • 2003-04: Grimsby Town
  • 2007-08: Luton Town
  • 2008-09: Luton Town

2010’s

  • 2010-11: Plymouth Argyle and Stockport County
  • 2012-13: Wolves and Portsmouth
  • 2014-15: Yeovil and Tranmere

Conclusion

Well this proves it. Back to back relegation only occurred twice in the 1990’s, three times in the 2000’s but six times already this decade. Bearing in mind we’re only halfway through the decade that’s quite remarkable.

What should we attribute it to? The divisions becoming more competitive? The hangover effect taking a real grip of clubs? Those are my two theories.
