WLB Analysis: Kings Of The Win To Nil

MARK O’Haire (@MarkOHaire) takes a look at Juventus’ domination of Serie A in recent seasons and a common feature in Old Lady wins.

Juventus: Kings Of The Win To Nil

Juventus were crowned kings of Italy for the third successive season in May and despite the departure of Antonio Conte as coach, the Old Lady have continued their relentless winning streak under Max Allegri.

But what’s proved incredibly impressive is Juve’s knack of keeping clean sheets. And of course, winning football matches. Combine the two trends and you’ve got a regular banker in the ‘win to nil’ column.

Looking at the Turin club’s results from the past two seasons and the 2014/15 campaign and we can see Juventus have won a staggering 70/88 (79%) Serie A matches – they bagged 27/38 (71%) wins in 2012/13, 33/38 (86%) wins in 2013/14 and have already notched 10/12 (83%) wins this time around.

Then look at the number of clean sheets kept when winning. Those 70 victories were joined by a whopping 48 shutouts – meaning 69% of wins have come with the opposition failing to score. Nine of their 10 wins in 2014/15 have arrived ‘to nil’, 22/33 (67%) did so last season and 17/27 (63%) in 2012/13.

So with 70/88 league wins secured since 2012/13 and 48/70 victories secured without the opposition scoring, we can see that 48/88 (55%) Serie A matches involving Juventus have resulted in the Old Lady winning ‘to nil’.

This weekend Allegri’s men host city rivals Torino at Juventus Stadium and Paddy Power are offering another win ‘to nil’ at 11/10. You know what to do.
