Southampton v Derby: Goals forecast for St Mary’s showdown

Danny Ings - Southampton

Daniel McCulloch (@DMcCulloch1984) turns his attention to the FA Cup and Wednesday night’s 3rd Round replay between Southampton and Derby.

Southampton v Derby | Wednesday 16th January 2019, 19:45 | BBC

As my own club, West Bromwich Albion, are currently in the Championship, I have actually seen more of Derby than Southampton this season.

I have been reasonably impressed when I have watched them but having looked like an automatic promotion challengers a couple of months ago, they now sit in sixth place, seven points off the front two.

The Rams won 4-1 at The Hawthorns back in October but have since gained just 19 points from 13 league matches. However, it should be noted that they have already played four of the top five in the division twice and they do not face the other member until the final game of the season.

What Derby have been is entertaining, with 18 of their 27 (67%) seeing both sides find the net. Additionally, they have faced three Premier League sides in cup competitions this term – Chelsea, Manchester United and Southampton – and the games have finished 3-2, 2-2 and 2-2.

Southampton matches have also seen both teams to score land regularly – 13 of 22 (59%) league matches. Since new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl joined the Saints, six of his eight matches have seen this bet land.

At first glance it may seem short, but with it difficult to guess line ups for cup games, it often pays to keep it simple. Regardless of who is on the pitch, I think 7/10 with Boylesports is value for both sides to net.
