A second night of Scottish League Cup action on Wednesday. Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) looks at the odds.
Hibernian v Dundee United | Wednesday 19:45
Just the three games in the Scottish League Cup on Wednesday. I was close to backing Aberdeen to beat Hamilton, after Accies lost their first game in over two months on Saturday but I can’t play at 11/10. I’ve no doubt Celtic will beat Partick but I can’t get involved at 1/4 when their home form has been so patchy this season. So, let’s pick out a big price.
I’m going to back Hibs to beat Dundee United at 11/4 with Coral. Just small stakes mind as I wouldn’t be shocked if they got thumped. Alan Stubbs’ side have been poor against weaker opposition this season but excellent against bigger teams and that fuels my approach here.
The Edinburgh side have lost to Alloa and Queen Of The South this campaign and have failed to beat Raith Rovers and Dumbarton at Easter Road. Any thoughts of an immediate return to the top flight look far-fetched.
Their performances against the better sides provide a much prettier picture though. They beat Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox and took them to extra time in the Challenge Cup and they got an excellent draw against runaway Championship leaders Hearts on Sunday. In this competition they’ve already knocked out a Premiership club when Ross County fell victims to them 2-0 in September.
Dundee United are up in third in the Premiership but I’ve been struggling to get impressed by them in all honesty. They lost key players in the summer and it’s starting to show now. Two defeats in their last three games haven’t helped their cause and I still can’t get their 6-1 thrashing to Celtic out my mind. Manager Jackie McNamara looks frustrated just now.
It’s Hibs, for me. They’re unbeaten in six and are capable of raising their game for this big occasion.
