A huge night in Paris as PSG host Chelsea in the Champions League. Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) eyes up the value.
PSG v Chelsea | Tuesday 19:45 | BT Sport Europe
A tale of two clubs. In the home corner, Paris St Germain, a side who have cruised through this season with the minimum of fuss. They sit an astonishing 24 points clear at the top of the table after winning 22 of their 26 league matches and are yet to taste Ligue 1 defeat.
Chelsea on the other hand have had an appalling campaign. Chalked up as favourites to retain their English title they were down in the belly of relegation trauma right up until Christmas and got rid of their saviour last season by showing Jose Mourinho the door.
When you sketch the game out like that, the 21/4 on Chelsea looks entirely fair. While PSG hardly have a hair out of place, Chelsea are windswept, scruffy and uncouth looking.
PSG have also been afforded the luxury of resting Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva from their weekend domestic fixture to make sure they’re finely tuned for this fixture. In contrast, Chelsea went into battle on Saturday night against Newcastle and although winning easy they did suffer a key casualty in John Terry.
Despite the lack of competition in France PSG comfortably reached the Last 16 of the competition as we’d expect. Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo were beaten home and away with ease while the French side managed a draw against Real Madrid at home and a narrow defeat in Spain.
Chelsea of course topped their group with the same number of points as PSG but their conquest was far more complicated. A 2-0 home win over Porto on the final matchday was enough to see them go through but it was an edgy campaign with a defeat in Portugal and dropped points in Kiev.
The Blues plan will be to protect their shaky defence in this match and those of you hoping for a great game are almost certain to be disappointed.
Now the stakes are higher I can see this Chelsea side rising to the occasion somewhat and giving PSG a decent match. All in all though it probably won’t be enough though to tame Laurent Blanc’s side.
I’ll have a nibble on the French champions keeping a clean sheet and taking a narrow or decent victory to Stamford Bridge in three weeks time.
