With the dust settling on the 2012/13 Premier League season, our stats guru Mark O’Haire (@SportingbetMark) decided to compile a list of interesting statistics and trends from each side.
These findings may or may not help influence our thinking come the beginning of August and may or may not provide some thought-provoking analysis but either way, it’s good to share…
- Home wins accounted for 43.7% of matches. Draws 28.4%. Away wins 27.9%.
- 74.7% of matches saw Over 1.5 Goals. 55.8% Over 2.5 Goals. 31.8% Over 3.5 Goals.
- There were 1,063 goals scored in the season. On average, 2.80 goals were scored per game with the home team averaging 1.56 goals per game and the away side, 1.24 goals per game.
- 6.4% of the goals scored were penalties.
- 15.8% of goals came after the 80th minute.
- There were 47 own goals – a Premier League record.
- The 1-1, 1-0 and 0-0 scorelines made up 40% of results.
- The 0-0 and 1-0 scorelines made up 50% of the half-time results.
- Spurs were the most profitable team to back with £1 level stakes on every Premier League match.
- Stoke were the least profitable team to back with £1 level stakes on every Premier League match.
Arsenal (4th)
- 12/1 to win the Premier League. 8/13 for Top Four. 1/12 for Top Six.
- -£2.22 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- The Emirates saw more goals than any other ground.
- Best home attack.
- Best away defence.
- Conceded more goals at home than they did away.
- 36% of home matches saw Over 4.5 Goals.
- 31% of away matches went Over 2.5 Goals.
- Won all 11 matches when leading at half-time.
- Unbeaten when scoring the 1st goal of a match.
- Produced a +16 goal difference during the last 15 minutes of matches.
- Won 12 of their final 16 league fixtures.
- Finished the season 3 points better off than in 2011/12.
Aston Villa (15th)
- Christian Benteke was 150/1 for Top Goalscorer (third).
- -£1.53 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- Christian Benteke scored or assisted 49% of Villa’s goals.
- Worst away defence.
- Collected least amount of clean sheets.
- Only side to collect more points away from home than at home.
- Scored more goals away from home than at home.
- Were 6th in the half-time table.
- Were 5th in the away half-time table.
- Only won 5 of 13 games when leading at half-time.
- Picked up only 1 point from 11 matches when losing at half-time.
Chelsea (3rd)
- 5/1 to win the Premier League. 1/3 for Top Four. 1/40 for Top Six.
- +2.06 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- Scored in 33/38 league games.
- Scored 52% of goals in the first-half.
- 68% of away games saw Over 2.5 Goals.
- Only home defeats came against Man Utd (1st) and QPR (20th).
- Juan Mata scored 8 of his 11 goals away from home.
- Roberto Di-Matteo won the Sack Race at 12/1
- Chelsea were Top London Club at 8/11.
Everton (6th)
- 5/1 for Top Six. 9/2 without the Big Six.
- -£2.81 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- Only lost 1 home match.
- Only won 4 games away from home.
- 20/23 matches before 2013 saw Both Teams Score.
- Only failed to score once at home.
- Kept 7 clean sheets in last 10 matches.
- Everton matches saw 21 goals in the first 15 minutes. 58% of goals in Everton matches arrived in the first-half.
- Dropped 21 points from winning positions.
- Everton drew 4 and lost 3 against the top eight.
- Everton won 7 and drew 3 at home v the bottom half.
- Everton drew 2 and lost 2 away against the bottom four.
- Leighton Baines was the only player in the Premier League to play every minute or every match this season.
Fulham (12th)
- -£7.90 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- 5th in the home half-time table.
- Picked up just 2 points from 12 matches when losing at half-time.
- Drew 4 and lost 14 when conceding the first goal of a match.
- Lost 6 of their last 8 league matches.
- 16/20 games before 2013 saw Over 2.5 Goals.
- 68% home matches saw Over 2.5 Goals.
- Conceded the same amount of goals at home, as they did away.
- Drew 1 and lost 6 at home to the top seven.
Liverpool (7th)
- 40/1 to win the Premier League.
- Luis Suarez 16/1 for Top Goalscorer (second).
- -£10.14 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match
- Scored more goals and conceded more goals away from home than at home.
- 78% of away games went Over 2.5 Goals.
- Kept clean sheets in 11/19 home matches.
- Beat bottom four clubs to nil, at home.

- Won by 4+ goals on 5 occasions.

Manchester City (2nd)
- 13/10 to win the Premier League. 1/33 for Top Four. 1/100 for Top Six. 9/2 for Man Utd/Man City straight forecast.

- Only lost twice at home.
- Best home defence.
- Scored 41 goals in their 19 home matches but only 25 away.
- Most clean sheets.
- Most home clean sheets.
- Went unbeaten in first 15 matches.
- Won 9 and lost 1 of their 10 home matches against bottom half.
- Only 12 of their final 32 league matches featured both teams scoring.
- Drew 4 matches 0-0 away – their most popular result away.
Manchester United (1st)
- 13/5 to win the Premier League. 1/14 for Top Four. 1/50 for Top Six. 9/2 for Man Utd/Man City straight forecast.
- Robin Van Persie 11/1 for Top Goalscorer (first).
- +£9.11 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- Won 28 matches. Only Chelsea (29) twice have bettered that record in Premier League history.
- Best away attack.
- Only failed to score on 3 occasions.
- Unbeaten when scoring the first goal of a match.
- Won 21 and drew 2 when leading at half-time.
- Won 29 points from the 16 matches when their opponents scored the first goal.
- Won 24 of their 28 matches against the bottom 14.
- 16 wins were by a 1-goal margin.
- Kept 10 of their 13 clean sheets after Christmas.
- 20 different players scored league goals for Man Utd.
- Weren’t involved in any goalless draws.
- Did not concede a single penalty kick.
Newcastle United (16th)
- 50/1 for relegation. Survival confirmed on penultimate weekend of the Premier League season.

- Picked up only 2 points from 12 matches when trailing at half-time.
- Came bottom of the Racing Post handicap table.

- Finished 16th in the home half-time table, leading in only 3 of their 19 matches at White Hart Lane at half-time.
- The Gareth Bale wincast paid out in 14 of Spurs’ 21 victories.

West Bromwich Albion (8th)
- 11/4 Top Midlands Club.
- +£10.13 from level £1 stakes placed on every Premier League match.
- Only drew 7 of their Premier League fixtures – only Man Utd drew less often.
- Won 8 of their 14 matches before December.
- Won 9 of their 19 home matches.
- 63% of their home matches saw Over 2.5 Goals.
- 60% of West Brom goals came in the first-half.
- Lost 17 matches – the same as 17th placed Sunderland.
