OUR Monday night NFL man Tom Selwyn (@tom_selwyn) hunts down the value in this week’s MNF match.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ San Diego Chargers | Tuesday 01:30 | Sky Sports 1
This game had the potential to be great before Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger went down injured earlier in the season. Now we’re left with Mike Vick who either isn’t allowed to throw down the field, or just plain can’t at this point in his career. Luckily for us we have the league’s leading passer, Philip Rivers, playing for the Chargers and I’ll be backing him to go Over 270.5 passing yards in this game.
With rookie RB Melvin Gordon being particularly underwhelming so far this season, it’s been up to Rivers to carry San Diego once again. The Chargers may only sit at 2-2 on the season, but Rivers has been prolific. He’s thrown for 1,248 yards across the first four games, averaging 312, but it’s in the home games that he has really excelled: In the two games in San Diego he’s thrown for 761 yards, averaging 380.5, and that’s well over what we would need this week.
Another thing that should help us here is that the Steelers are missing their athletic LB Ryan Shazier who would be patrolling the middle of the field. This should allow RB Danny Woodhead (who leads the league in yards after the catch) and returning TE Antonio Gates more room to operate.
Pittsburgh may not be at their entertaining best without their starting QB, but Philip Rivers should still be throwing it all over the field to get us over the line.
