Newcastle v Liverpool: Benitez’s boys can keep Reds in-check

Rafa Benitez - Newcastle

LIVERPOOL head to Newcastle on Saturday night as they look to keep their Premier League title dreams alive. We asked Tom Love (@TomLove_18) to source the best bets.

With Man City winning narrowly at Burnley last week, Liverpool’s title chances are still out of their own hands. They simply have to win here to keep the pressure on and the bookies think they will with the Reds been chalked up at odds as short as 1/3.

It remains to be seen how much of an impact the heavy midweek defeat at Barcelona will have on Jurgen Klopp’s troops, but they’ve had a quick turnaround since Wednesday night and have likely to have had just the one day’s full training since then in preparation for their trip to the North East.

The Merseyside club didn’t play all that badly in the Catalan capital but quality in finishing was the difference. They’d need a gargantuan effort and luck on their side to get to the Champions League final. It could’ve dented their confidence though and that makes you question the short quotes.

Newcastle have been safe for a while now but have still been getting decent results and in Ayoze Perez they have a man in-form. Rafa Benitez is up against his former club here but I don’t agree with the notion that he will let his players down tools to do Liverpool a favour, if anything I think he will be more fired up to get a result.

You’d have to stretch to a -1.5 line to back the visitors at any kind of appropriate price. Instead, I’m much more inclined to get the hosts onside in the flip of that said line at 11/13 (BetVictor). This way we get a Newcastle win, draw or loss by one goal all on our side.

I think the midweek exertions by Liverpool could show here. On the rod they aren’t as convincing, rarely blowing teams away they’re more defensive minded.

I’m also happy to dip into the player Shots On-Target market again. Jordan Henderson has revelled in a more advanced role in the last month or so and after starting on the bench in Barcelona I’d expect him to start here.

If he does once more play as the most advanced of the midfield trident, I think the 27/10 available with Coral’s BuildYourBet feature on the England international to have 1+ shot on-target is too big.

He’s a Mackem born-and-bred so he will be right up for having a serious impact against the Toon Army. This same bet is as short as 5/4 elsewhere, which looks like a major discrepancy we can take advantage of. I’d have expected it to be no bigger than 2/1.

Best Bets

Newcastle v Liverpool – Newcastle +1.5 Asian Handicap (11/13 BetVictor)

Newcastle v Liverpool – Jordan Henderson to have 1+ shot on-target (27/10 Coral)
