MLS Tips | 16th-18th April 2016

OUR Stateside man Will Dyer (@w2Dyer) is back with his best bets in MLS this weekend.

DC United v Toronto FC | Saturday 22:05 | Sky Sports 5

As is always the case with MLS, certain teams are very strong at home but woeful on the road. One of those teams is Toronto who’ve won just one of their last 14 MLS away games. They have been dealt a tough hand again this season with this being their sixth consecutive away game.

Last season the Reds went through a patch on their travels where they conceded at least two goals for nine games in a row; a total of 28 leaked in nine matches, truly abysmal.

They are conceding just one goal per game on average this season but I do not think they’ve done enough to resolve those defensive issues completely and DC are in good spirits after a rampant 4-0 win over the usually resolute Vancouver Whitecaps.

A double by Fabian Espindola and a late quick-fire double from Alvaro Saborio gave DC a convincing win and one they thoroughly deserved after registering 13 shots on target at the RFK Stadium.

The recent 3-0 reverse at home to FC Dallas by DC doesn’t look too bad now with FCD taking the initiative at the top of the Western Conference. The Black and Red capitulated towards the back end of the season last year but they did record a home record of W11-D3-L3 which deserves great credit.

United can be a very direct team at times. They surrender possession for much of the game but frequently score out of nowhere. Much like Leicester City are doing in the Premier League.

Recent draws against New England, San Jose and Colorado for DC are quite respectable and tell me that there are better things to come from the four times MLS champions. I can see them giving Toronto trouble but the brilliance of Sebastian Giovinco puts a little doubt in my mind so I’ll back them on the 0 Asian Handicap at 11/13 with BetVictor.

Real Salt Lake v Vancouver Whitecaps | Sunday 03:05

Real are now the only unbeaten team left in MLS. Their brilliant start has seen them win both of their two games at the Rio Tinto thus far; things are looking very rosy. They’ve lost just two of their last 16 home games and those two were to Portland Timbers and FC Dallas; arguably 2015’s two best teams.

Vancouver took a very hefty blow last weekend losing 4-0 in Washington DC. Losing so heavily is very uncharacteristic of Carl Robinson’s team. They can be a tricky customer on their travels but that reputation kind of crumbled towards the end of last season; winning just one of their last seven games away from BC Place.

This Whitecaps team looks a bit toothless without Octavio Rivero and Pedro Morales who both have hip strains. RSL have a long list of injuries themselves but most are to fringe players.

I make Real Salt Lake a very tasty proposition at 21/20 with William Hill so I’m taking Real to continue their 100% record in Salt Lake City this season.

FC Dallas v Sporting Kansas City | Monday 00:05 | Sky Sports 2

Fresh from a 3-1 victory in Oregon over the reigning MLS Cup Champions, FC Dallas head back home to their beloved Toyota Stadium, a place where they’ve blown pretty much everyone away for a good while.

Dallas have scored 2+ in five of their seven games so far this season whilst Sporting have done so in only two out of six. Kansas City’s midweek loss at home to Colorado displayed an inability to win games in which they’ve had much of the ball.

I think they are missing Krizstian Nemeth who moved to Qatar earlier this year. His wing play set up more clear cut chances than they are currently producing.

I strongly believe that the Western Conference is in Dallas’ hands this year and another win here would build a nice cushion over the rest of the league even at this early stage. Mauro Diaz could be missing for Dallas which is a blow but arguably not as big as SKC missing Matt Besler and Brad Davis.

Houston Dynamo v LA Galaxy | Saturday 00:05 | Sky Sports 1

Houston can consider themselves quite unlucky having only five points after five games. A late Chad Marshall goal last weekend for the Sounders robbed them of all three points; they lost a tight game in Vancouver the week before to a Pedro Morales penalty in a game which they played rather well.

Owen Coyle has evidently learnt from his first season in MLS and the transfer window has allowed him to stamp his own mark on the team. So far they can boast the highest goals per game ratio of all 20 MLS sides in 2016 and they’ve hammered FC Dallas 5-0 with some clinical finishing.

Both of their two defeats have come by one goal margins and both were away from home. Dynamo have lost just three of their last 19 home MLS games whilst LA have won just two of their last 17 away games.

LA haven’t even scored an away goal yet this season and they remain without Steven Gerrard, Dan Kennedy, Robbie Keane, Leonardo, Jeff Larentowicz and now add Robbie Rodgers to the sidelined list.

The odds on the home win are not overly attractive and I feel there’s a strong possibility of a draw so I’ll take some security with a play on the 0 Asian Handicap at 4/6 with BetVictor. The stats certainly back us up that Dynamo are pretty unlikely to lose at the BBVA Compass.

Real Salt Lake v Vancouver Whitecaps – Real Salt Lake to win (21/20 William Hill)
