MAN City look to end their Group D campaign on a high when they face Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night. Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) shares his thoughts.
Manchester City v Borussia Monchengladbach | Tuesday 19:45 | BT Sport 2
Ah, the enigma that is Manchester City. Imagine trying to make a living predicting their results. Over the last month they’ve gone from losing 4-1 at home to Liverpool, to easing past Southampton and Hull to then losing fair and squarely at Stoke.
That Britannia defeat on Saturday has saw them drift to 6/4 for the title and their injury worries (Kompany and Aguero to be precise) are cause for concern.
They’ve already qualified for the Last 16 of the Champions League but a win here could push them up to first place as long as Juventus lose in Sevilla. So there’s certainly a carrot for the club to attack.
Monchengladbach cannot qualify and instead are odds on to finish in third position and qualify for the Last 32 of the Europa League. The German club arrive here on the back of a phenomenal weekend.
Yes, Andre Schubert’s side did the seemingly impossible on Saturday and convincingly beat Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Their 3-1 win sent shockwaves throughout the European football scene, but what sort of effect will it have on them here?
I’m always inclined to oppose sides coming off the back of sense-defying results. Indeed last season it was a pattern that proved fruitful and profitable. I called it The Hangover Effect.
I’m happy to give it another whirl here on Tuesday night. Yes, I spend hours poring through the form and coming up with logical angles when writing these previews so let’s try something different here.
Yes, Man City are not exactly in a great place, they have injuries, inconsistent form and don’t even need to win here but Monchengladbach are my focus as I look to test the The Hangover Effect again. You could call it the anti-momentum.
So with nothing of huge importance to play for and their stunning win on Saturday still filtering through their minds and conversation I’m happy to take them on.
Man City offer no value here to be honest at 8/11 but I’m testing theory rather than odds. I’ll back them at 8/5 with 888 Sport on them winning by more than one goal. Let’s see if this theory has legs to it.
