Horse Racing: Racing journalist James Stevens picks out his best bets from Fontwell

RACING journalist James Stevens (@JanesStevens180) makes his WLB debut by analysing all races at Fontwell this Sunday.

Nicky Henderson’s Kilcrea Vale is set to go off a short price favourite after a duo of encouraging runs. As De Mee is a horse I like a lot, and has handed me a tidy profit throughout the course of the season.

His Aintree win earlier in the season is much stronger than anything else in the field, and I don’t think his 3lb penalty is anything to worry about. He was a bit disappointing last time out, but he returns from a break; whilst the conditions will play to his strength. Trainer Paul Nicholls is confident, describing him as “hard to beat” in the Racing Plus.

The Geegeez Geegee may well be very hard to stop on the weights. He ran out a winner at Fontwell last time out and is handicapped well enough to do it again.

But I like the look of Wizard’s Bridge whose is dropped down in grade. His form has been poor recently, but he’s carrying a fair weight and I’m confident he’s capable of winning a race like this.

A good renewal of the National Spirit with Lil Rockfeller in a good place to reclaim the prize but also some good contenders from some of the leading yards.

Henderson himself saddles both Different Gravey and L’Ami Serge. L’Ami Serge has been getting close to winning in similar contests, but I think he may just find an inform Different Gravey too much.

Different Gravey switches back to hurdles and if he finds his old form could well be very special. He’s thought a lot of and everything went against him last time out. It’s a gamble of whether a switch in obstacles helps him, but with a horse of that quality I fancy that gamble.

Peak To Peak is a horse that I’ve been tracking for a while now and Paul Nicholls has made no secret in how happy he is with this smart prospect.

His form hasn’t been exceptional, having been easily beaten in a Grade One before finishing a close third last time out and on paper to beat Sir Anthony Browne is a tough ask.

But I think he’ll be a lot better from that run, and can certainly play his part. He’s yet to live up to his capabilities but I think he will soon enough.

Sir Anthony Browne is a top horse but he came out of the last race with a breathing issue and I don’t think he’ll be at his very best. His recent form is by far the best but I’m hoping he gets caught out today.

Paul Nicholls’ Mon Parrin looks set for an easy win at Fontwell but not at much of a price. He was disappointing to finish fifth last time but is clearly much better than that form, and much better than anything in the field today. Expect a big run but don’t expect a big price. Current Exchange is the biggest of dangers, and a forecast with the pair may well be the best bet for the race.

Third Act probably holds the strongest of chances for Colin Tizzard this afternoon. He’ll carry top weight yet Paul O’Brien is set to take 5lb off his back which will very much help his chances. The ground will be fine but the longer trip may be his only downfall. He should run a good race regardless.

Capsis Desbois is also worth mentioning, he was pulled up last time out but returns on a nice mark this afternoon. He’s weighted nicely and could run a big race for Gary Moore.

Win – Third Act, E/W – Capsis Desbois

Larry makes his debut for Gary Moore against some more experienced types, but is very well bred and could be a very special horse. His trainer likes his ability shown at home, and this is a wide open race. But as always with newcomers it’s hard to judge how they’ll take to racing.
