Horse Racing: Naas the base for some Sunday success

Success Days

RACING fan Graeme Johnston (@GraemeJ_83) picks out his best bet from Sunday’s racing.

The Vincent O’Brien Centenary Alleged Stakes normally attracts some big names making their seasonal debuts and this year is no different. Though we have no superstars, we have horses with plenty of Group 1 experience and the race should throw up a decent winner.

US Army Ranger (7/4 Betway) won his first two starts before coming second in the Epsom Derby on his third. Since then he hasn’t looked like the superstar his stable thought he was and in my opinion he looked slow.

He also doesn’t seem to enjoy soft ground so I’m not sure this race will suit him. He may have improved over the winter and I may end up looking silly but he’s not of interest to me here.

Stellar Mass (5/1 Bet365) improved throughout last season and after taking eight attempts to break his maiden, he went on and finished third in an Irish Derby before his form rather tailed off.

He may have further improvement in him however he is another who isn’t likely to produce his best form on softer ground and he is likely to come on for this race.

Success Days (7/2 Bet365) has had a really good career so far and is a slightly underrated horse in my opinion. He loves heavy ground and has a proven record fresh.

Last year on his seasonal debut he was second trying to concede 6lbs to Zhukova with Found behind him (in this race when it was held at the Curragh) and that form stood up well.

He has a verdict over US Army Ranger from last year too and I think he will get his 2017 campaign off to a flyer here.
