Horse Racing: Five to follow from Thursday’s action

HORSE RACING columnist George Storr (@George_Storr1) shares his favourite fancies from Thursday’s action.

Thursday 3rd September 2020

On Thursday we’ve got racing picks from around the UK, including a promising debutant, a new-found all-weather specialist and a couple of well-bred specimens.

We’ve recommended these selections as singles, but they could be combined however you see fit.

2.40 Salisbury

Favourites don’t fare well in this race, with only one of the last 10 having justified their jolly status with a win.

Light Refrain could well defy that statistic, but Noon Star is preferred here. Sir Michael Stoute won this race with a newcomer in 2019 and this Galileo-sired filly is bred to impress.

2.50 Haydock

Al Rufaa looks hard to oppose over seven furlongs.

The promising colt is looking to make it five wins on the bounce and trainer John Gosden has racked up six wins from 25 runs in the last two weeks. The form should hold once again.

3.00 Newcastle

There are plenty of chances in this class two one-miler, despite the small field, but it’s Run This Way that is preferred.

The two-year-old filly ran an impressive race at Haydock last month – making all with plenty to spare at the finish. She can win again off this mark.

3.20 Haydock

John Gosden may have a Haydock double on his hands as it’s Sun Bear that makes the most appeal in this fillies’ handicap, albeit in the face of stiff competition.

She goes up against Alpine Mistral – a Shaun Keightley trained filly with Josephine Gordon aboard. That pairing struck gold on Wednesday at Wolverhampton but Sun Bear’s breeding should prove too much here.

6.20 Chelmsford

Bavardages looks to be a horse suited to the all-weather.

The Mark Johnston trained three-year-old won over nine furlongs at Wolverhampton just 13 days ago and may double up off this slightly higher mark.
