ENGLAND continue their Euro 2016 prep with this trip to Germany. Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) offers his view on the game.
Germany v England | Saturday 19:45 | ITV1
It’s just two and half months till Euro 2016 kicks off and this match provides England with a stiff test as they bid to exceed expectation in a major tournament for the first time in 20 years.
Since the embarrassing downer of the 2014 World Cup, Roy Hodgson’s side have bounced back well with 10 wins out of 10 in their albeit weak qualifying group.
The group may have been weak but England achieved something that no other nation did in these qualifiers by winning every one of their group matches. A 2-0 win in Switzerland and 3-2 victory in Slovenia deserve respect.
As always though with England, it’s when the pressure gets turned up that they struggle. They lost to Italy and Uruguay in the World Cup two years ago and finished bottom of their group. A section featuring Russia, Wales and Slovakia this summer should allow them to hit the ground running in France.
Let’s focus on their friendly results though and they paint a promising picture with just one defeat in 10 since losing to Germany in November 2013.
In the last year they’ve lost to Spain, beaten France and drawn with Italy. Away from home they’ve won just one of their last seven friendly ties but been smart enough to draw in Brazil and Italy.
Germany didn’t look as imposing in their Euro 2016 qualifying group as we expected after their triumph in Brazil in 2014 and indeed they lost to Poland and the Republic Of Ireland despite finishing top of their competitive section.
It was clear that motivation was a factor immediately after their World Cup triumph as they began their Euro 2016 campaign with an uneasy win over Scotland, a loss in Poland and a draw in Ireland. You’d like to think that a match against England weeks before a new tournament will have them licking their lips.
Unlike England, Germany have been patchy in recent friendlies. They’ve only won one of their last five post-World Cup match-ups and have lost to United States and only drawn with Australia. Again, motivation must be a factor.
England have won in Germany the last two times the sides have met there and I think they’ll put up another strong performance here on Saturday.
They arrive here in good heart and after the shambles of Brazil two years ago will be determined to post a big effort in France this summer. A good performance here will be ideal.
While Germany are a better side you simply have to question their results since winning the World Cup. On seven occasions since that epic night 20 months ago they’ve failed to win and at 4/6 I’m happy to swerve them.
Backing England on the Double Chance at 11/8 appeals and even a safer bet at +0.75 catches the eye but it’s the 31/10 on a draw with Bet Victor that really sticks out for me. It’s too big a price and I’ll have a small interest in it.
