AFTER a rousing win in Germany on Saturday night England now focus on the Netherlands on Tuesday night. Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) shares his thoughts.
England v Netherlands | Tuesday 20:00 | ITV1
Saturday night felt like a mini-watershed moment for England. After spending all this decade feeling crap about themselves things may have turned.
Their 3-2 win in Germany didn’t just look good on paper but it also brought many positives visually. Firstly coming back from 2-0 down showed real heart but for the revival to be spearheaded by young players like Harry Kane and Eric Dier was hugely encouraging.
29 year old Jamie Vardy scored the equaliser and that added to the feeling that this team had been crafted in the soul of this electric Premier League season where underdogs thrive.
Next up for England is a match against Europe’s biggest flops The Netherlands (not sure you’re allowed to call them Holland any more, no one else does) and this brings another chance of a boost with the tournament approaching.
You all know about the Netherlands by now. World Cup semi-finalists in 2014 to losing five of their 10 Euro 2016 qualifiers and failing to get out of their group.
Qualification wasn’t even close, they sat five points behind Turkey in third place, lost home and away to Iceland and were hammered 3-0 in Turkey.
Their form in friendlies since the World Cup hardly offer much hope either although their results aren’t quite as garish as their Euro qualifying form.
P6 W2 D0 L4 are their friendly scores and while they did lose to Mexico and the USA in that run they’ve also picked up wins against Spain and Wales.
They hosted France on Friday night in Amsterdam and went down 3-2. They were 2-0 down early and managed to pick themselves up well to almost snatch a draw.
It’s very hard to pick holes in England’s form. They’ve just had back to back wins against Germany and France and won all 10 of their Euro 2016 qualifiers. They haven’t lost a home match since 2013 and for me deserve to go into this game at odds on.
Holland for all their woes are in decent scoring form. They’ve banged in nine in their last four matches and three of those games were against Euro 2016 qualifiers.
I’ll have my main bet on Both Teams To Score at a fairly reasonable 10/11 and I’ll top that up with small Correct Score bets on an England victory.
