BUNDESLIGA fanatic Jonny O’Sullivan (@libero_the) has taken a deep dive into matchday 13 from Germany, picking out his best bets.
It was a curious weekend in the Bundesliga last week as high-flying Borussia Monchengladbach suffered defeat at home at the hands of Union Berlin in what was not even the biggest shock of the matchday.
Dortmund had to come back from 3-0 down at home to draw against the worst team in the division (Paderborn), by some distance. Hoffenheim also suffered a horrendous defeat; losing 5-1 with an extra man against a below-average Mainz outfit.
Bayern Munich’s rejuvenation under caretaker manager Hansi Flick was evident as, after their Champions League performance midweek, the Bavarians have now W4-D0-L4, scoring 16 and conceding zero. Turns out they are quite a good team, after all.
Leipzig continued their impressive form as they scored just the four goals last weekend, at the expense of a hapless Koln.
Koln v Augsburg | Saturday 30th November 2019, 14:30
Suggesting Under 2.5 Goals (33/25 Marathon) is always the least enjoyable selection you can possibly suggest. It leads to watching a game praying for a lack of quality and a big, horrible and ugly midfield scrap. However, a lack of quality is at a premium in this match and if you tune in to watch, chances are you will be asleep by the half-hour mark.
Augsburg head into the game chasing their third straight win in the league and will be fairly confident in achieving this against an out-of-form Koln. The hosts have scored only 11 goals in 12 games so far this season and have only managed five in their first five home games, whilst only notching twice or more on two occasions since promotion.
The Billy Goats will entertain an Augsburg side who only five teams have scored fewer goals than. Only Union Berlin have scored fewer away goals than the Fuggerstädter, with the visitors only scoring twice or more once this season.
Neither team plays particularly entertaining football. With neither eager to lose this, it could be a tense affair with very little goalmouth action. When teams are struggling towards the basement of the table, the first thing that disappears is the creative qualities. This will be something which will surely be evident this weekend.
Paderborn v RB Leipzig | Saturday 30th November 2019, 14:30
This could honestly be a copy and paste job from last weekend’s preview. Leipzig are simply electric in front of goal with players such as Timo Werner scoring for fun.
Paderborn were excellent last Friday in their 3-3 draw against an out-of-sorts Dortmund, but they face a completely different prospect this matchday. Dortmund look nowhere near the team they were expected to be. Jaydon Sancho is feeling ‘humiliated’ but you would fancy an 18-stone Sunday league striker to get in behind the hosts’ defence right now.
Paderborn hold the worst defensive record in the league, conceding a horrific 29 goals in 12 matches and they are facing a side who have scored four or more goals four times in the last six matches.
Leipzig have slotted 33 goals in 12 matches and hold the joint-highest scoring record in the league, along with Bayern, and their strikers will be licking their lips at the chance of scoring even more on Saturday.
Werner is an ambitious man and he will still hold faint hopes that he can catch the all-conquering Robert Lewandowski and beat him to the golden boot. Lewandowski is four goals ahead of the German forward and there is no doubt Turbo Timo will view opponents such as Paderborn as the perfect opportunity to make up some ground.
