A huge game in Germany on Thursday as Borussia Dortmund host Tottenham. In-form Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) takes a look at the odds.
Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham | Thursday 18:00 | BT Sport 2
Well this is tasty isn’t? Two of the shining lights of the top European leagues this season clash here in what will hopefully be a superb Europa League Last 16 tie.
Both sides lie sec0nd in their domestic leagues and this match-up adds real glamour to a competition that many people in England have struggled to love. Let’s just cut to the chase…
The appointment of Thomas Tuchel at Dortmund has so far been a great success and BVB lie 16 points clear of third place Hertha Berlin. The problem they have though is matching the magnificence of Bayern Munich who remain five points ahead of them after their draw on Saturday.
Crunch the numbers on this side though and they make formidable reading. Since they returned from their winter break Dortmund have won nine of their 11 matches, dropping points just to Bayern and away at Hertha.
Their home form has been outstanding with 10 wins from their 12 league matches and overall have won 16 of their 19 games on home turf. It’s not a record to mess with.
What’s been refreshing about this side is their commitment to the Europa League and they’ve blitzed past a number of the teams they’ve been up against in the competition. An example of their professionalism in this competition was their excellent home and away victories over FC Porto in the previous round. There’s lots to like about this side and they’re surely in the Top 10 best sides in Europe at present.
Tottenham have hugely impressed me this season. I’m sure most people feel the same due to the fact they sit second in the English Premier League and look live title contenders.
They were comfortable winners of their group in this competition and then went on from there to dismiss Fiorentina in the Last 32.
I opposed Spurs in both those matches and the manner of their victory surprised me. The Viola have been excellent in Serie A this season and took that tie very seriously. Beating them 4-1 on aggregate was a serious achievement.
It looks like manager Mauricio Pochettino will make tweaks to his side as he bids to go for Premier League glory. Delle Ali, Danny Rose and Eric Dier will also miss the game on Thursday for various reasons.
Despite this perhaps not being a primary aim of theirs I’m surprised to see Tottenham as big as 6/1 here. In all honesty I think they’re due a wee bit more respect on what they’ve achieved this season. Perhaps Dortmund will also make changes to their team now that they know they’re in a thick of a title battle with Bayern?
This is one of the biggest fixtures in the history of Spurs and to meekly throw it away wouldn’t feel right at all. Surely they’ll be pumped for this fixture?
From a price point of view I’d love to get with Spurs but while 6/1 is tasty the handicap markets aren’t giving enough juice. They’re just a shade of odds against +1 on the Asian Handicap but of course it would mean they would have to avoid defeat to receive any payment.
So instead I’ll bank on Spurs keeping the tie alive and leaving Germany with just a one goal defeat. That’s available to back at a decent 11/4 with Skybet.
