APOEL Nicosia v Tottenham: Spurs can squeeze out a narrow success in Cyprus

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE continues on Tuesday night. Here Adam Goodwin (@AGJournalism) picks out his favourite fancies from Spurs’ visit to Cyprus to face APOEL.

Tottenham’s move to Wembley was far from a smooth transition and they are yet to win a Premier League game at the national stadium.

Some feared that Spurs’ Wembley hoodoo would continue in the Champions League, but they silenced their critics by beating German giants Dortmund 3-1 in their first game in Group H.

Dortmund dominated possession in the game and had a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal ruled out for offside, but a Harry Kane brace secured the win for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

APOEL were less fortunate in their opening game in Group H, losing 3-0 to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Losing by this scoreline away to Madrid is nothing to be ashamed of, but it probably should’ve been a lot more.

APOEL rarely ventured out of their own half and Keylor Navas barely touched the ball as the Cypriot’s were happy to sit back and limit Real Madrid as much as possible. It will be interesting to see if APOEL opt for a similar approach at home to Tottenham.

The betting angle

Tottenham didn’t travel particularly well when playing away from home in the Champions League last season – losing to Monaco, drawing to Leverkusen and scraping past CSKA Moscow. I’m happy to back Spurs on Tuesday, but I don’t think they’ll win it convincingly.

APOEL have been in the Champions League in six of the last 10 seasons and have decent calibre in this competition. They faced Barcelona and PSG in the group stages in 2014/15 and only lost 1-0 at home to the European titans.

Dele Alli and Moussa Dembele are missing for Tottenham but they will have enough to get past APOEL in Cyprus. Back Tottenham to win and Under 2.5 Goals at 14/5 with Unibet.
