THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE quarter-final ties continue on Wednesday as Ajax entertain Juventus in Amsterdam. Daniel McCulloch (@DMcCulloch1984) shares his betting thoughts.
Ajax v Juventus | Wednesday 10th April 2019, 20:00 | BT Sport
When I initially looked at this match, I wanted to side with Both Teams To Score, hoping that the market had overestimated Juventus’s tendency to feature in drab matches away from home, and also underestimated the absence of centre back Giorgio Chiellini.
Unfortunately, a best price of 3/4 on said market suggests that is not the case, so my eyes were drawn elsewhere.
Wednesday night sees the return to the Juventus starting line-up of their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese is arguably the second best player of his generation – or perhaps even all-time – and I fancy him to find the net in Amsterdam.
Ronaldo is 11/8 with Unibet in the Anytime Goalscorer market, which seems too big to me. This season he has found the net in 18 of his 35 matches for Juventus, while he has scored in six of his last 12 Champions League matches away from home.
Given that he has faced Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in that timeframe, that’s no mean feat. To put this price in to some perspective, Ronaldo has 597 club goals in 799 appearances, while Juan Cuadrado – 45 goals in 340 club games – is 11/5 in the same market!
Ronnie also looks too big at 4/1 in the First Goalscorer market but given that I fancy Ajax to score, I will stick with the Anytime price.
