Wellington Phoenix

Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets | Saturday 06.15 | BT Sport 1

Sydney have been no way near as impressive as last season in general but have arguably been better at home than in 2014/15.

At this stage last season they’d just suffered three defeats on the bounce and all of them came at home meaning they were W2-D3-L3 after seven at the Allianz. This season though they are W3-D3-L1.

Away days have not been as enjoyable but there are signs they could be hitting form like they did at this stage last season.

Milos Ninkovic and Filip Holosko have proved brilliant signings. Top scorer Alex Brosque is out for a month so rather than back the Sky Blues to run away with this I’ll opt for something else.

Newcastle have been woefully tame in front of goal scoring just nine goals in 13 games; only four players have got on the scoresheet for the Jets and facing a Sydney team that’s kept clean sheets in four of their last six outings at Allianz including over top of the table Brisbane you’d fancy Sydney to shut Newcastle out.

The home win ‘to nil’ is 11/8 with BetVictor.

Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers | Saturday 08.30 | BT Sport/ESPN

City remain the most exciting team in the A-League entering 2016. They’ve scored 12 more goals than anyone else but defensively only Central Coast have conceded more than their 22 leaked.

They square up against Western Sydney who’ve certainly made a statement this season fighting back from their abysmal ninth-place finish last year.

Four of the last five meetings between these clubs have gone Over 2.5 Goals since 2014 including when Wanderers visited Melbourne back in November and put in a brilliant second-half display to win 3-0.

City didn’t take too kindly to that result and followed it up with four wins and a draw in their next games. They’ve not won in their last two again and I expect a response.

They’ve scored two or more in all of their seven games at home aside from that game against WSW which compliments the visitors scoring record nicely; WSW have scored two or more in their last four away games.

I think we are in for a goal fest here. This gameweek has started off in true Aussie fashion with a game of two halves in a 3-3 draw between Central Coast and Victory and hopefully this game is of the same ilk.

Over 3.5 Goals is 17/10 with BetVictor.

Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar | Sunday 06.00 | BT Sport 2

At the start of the season you’d of been nuts if you thought Brisbane would be odds on to win in New Zealand. I still think this price is nuts now even with Roar at the top of the table.

The ‘Nix suffered a terrible 3-1 in Central Coast last time out but they have always been poor travellers having to cross the Tasman Sea for every road game and we saw on Friday that the Mariners are no mugs in front of goal this season.

Anyone could have lost 3-1 that day and Wellington still dominated the ball all game despite defeat so I’m not too concerned for them.

Six of Brisbane’s eight wins this season have come at home which means they have a W2-D2-L2 record on the road and makes Bet365’s 19/20 on Wellington Double Chance too big in my opinion.

The ‘Nix visited Queensland just last month and actually lead the game and came up just short in a 2-1 defeat. They are a decent team despite the loss of Michael McGlinchey and Nathan Burns in the transfer window.

They’ve already beaten Roar 3-2 at home this season and beat them 3-0 last season too. We’ll get paid out if they avoid defeat.

Best Bets

Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets – Sydney FC to win ‘to nil’ (11/8 BetVictor)

Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers – Over 3.5 Goals (17/10 BetVictor)

Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar – Wellington Phoenix double chance (19/20 Bet365)
