IT’S been a difficult few weeks for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. Can things improve on Wednesday night against Borussia Dortmund? Chris Graham (@chrisgraham79) takes a look.
Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund | Wednesday 19:45 | Sky Sports 1
Gosh, look at Arsenal down in eight place in the Premier League. You’d never see Borussia Dortmund struggle like that. Well, actually…
Yes, this is very much a match between two sides who’ve had a disappointing domestic season so far. Arsenal have won just four of their 12 league matches this season and find themselves a mere six points off a relegation place. Two defeats in a row have called into question the future of manager Arsene Wenger.
For Dortmund, things have been a whole lot worse. Jurgen Klopp’s side actually fell to the bottom of the Bundesliga table before the international break but have since climbed up to the dizzy heights of 16th. Four points from their last six indicate that a recovery might just be on the way.
Despite their domestic woes, both sides look all set for a Last 16 berth. But in truth it’s been far easier for Dortmund than Arsenal. The Germans have won all four of their group games and have scored more goals than any other side in the competition after smashing 13 past Arsenal, Galatasaray and Anderlecht.
Arsenal will be fine, but they’ve made things difficult for themselves. Losing to Dortmund in Germany was nothing to be ashamed about but two incredible matches against average Anderlecht highlighted their deficiencies. Two goals in the last five minutes of the match in Belgium turned zero points into three in the blink of an eye. But more epically, two weeks later in London, they surrendered a three-goal lead to turn three points into one. What a faff!
Over the seven occasions these sides have played against each other, exactly two or three goals were scored on five occasions. I think Wednesday will have a similar scoreline. Both sides are more than capable of scoring but I imagine the intensity levels won’t be as extreme with both sides pretty much through to the Last 16.
It’s also worth noting that in seven of the last eight Arsenal league games, exactly two or three goals were scored. There’s enough evidence for me to get involved at the 23/20 that BetVictor are offering.
