Scottish Football: Blue Toon to bite exhausted Spiders, says Willie Duncan

SCOTTISH football bible Willie Duncan (@Willie_Duncan) shares his favourite fancy from north of the border this weekend.

Peterhead v Queen’s Park | Saturday 15:00

Poor old Queen’s Park.

Gus MacPherson’s team went toe-to-toe with Ayr in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup and, despite matching the Honest Men for 210 minutes, there was no reward in the end for the Spiders.

Instead, they suffered a sickening 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss and, somehow, they have to find a way to lift themselves for Saturday’s League One clash with Peterhead at Balmoor.

That won’t be easy – despite being in the third tier now, Queen’s Park are still an amateur side and I’m not convinced that MacPherson’s men will have much left in the tank.

Blue Toon biting back

Peterhead went out of the Cup back in November after suffering a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Alloa, but Jim McInally’s side will be in good spirits after taking some revenge by stinging the Wasps in the league last weekend.

Peterhead have been plagued by inconsistency, particularly on home turf and, indeed, just one of the Blue Toon’s last six victories has come at Balmoor.

It is worth noting, though, that Peterhead cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win on the last occasion that they hosted Queen’s Park, while the two teams settled for a goalless draw when they met at Hampden Park in November.

McAllister back amongst the goals

Rory McAllister has hit just seven league goals for Peterhead so far this season – a disappointing return given that the 29-year-old striker scored 22 times in the third tier for the Blue Toon last term.

McAllister, though, has grabbed two goals in his last three games and Peterhead fans will be hoping that their star striker is warming to the task of getting the goals that will pull McInally’s side clear of the bottom two teams in the division.

Spiders running on empty

If Peterhead put in another good shift, they can pick up three precious points against a Queen’s Park side that will be running on empty on Saturday afternoon.

The 21/20 quote, therefore, from Bet365 for Peterhead to take full advantage by beating Queen’s Park is the best bet from Scotland this weekend.
