I love this fixture. Maybe it’s my age and the fact these sides clashed so memorably during the late-80’s and early-90’s when I was completely obsessed with the game but I certainly look forward to these matches.
On Wednesday they meet at Anfield with Liverpool looking to get back into Champions League qualification contention while Arsenal look to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
As I’ve mentioned before Liverpool are a nightmare to write about at the moment. They veer from destroying Southampton at St Mary’s to losing 3-0 at Watford. They’re incredibly inconsistent and there can’t be one punter in the world who has confidence when backing them or opposing them just now.
They became only the second side this season to beat Leicester in the league but followed that up a week later with a comprehensive defeat at West Ham. They certainly are a puzzle.
As for Arsenal, it’s seven wins from their last eight matches overall and they sit two points clear at the top of the table. That’s title winning form for sure.
One massive hurdle that Arsenal seem to have overcome is their ability to beat senior sides in and around them in the table. In 2015 they beat Man City twice, Manchester United twice and Liverpool by four goals to one back in April.
Liverpool seem impossible to call this season so I’ll use Arsenal as my guide here when placing a bet. I can’t see them losing but odds of 17/10 don’t really appeal when up against this erratic side.
Two of the last three matches between the sides ended in a draw and I’m thinking we’ll see something similar here on Wednesday. Arsenal have won just one of their last four away matches while Liverpool are fresh from beating Leicester at Anfield and won’t be easy to overcome.
