WILLIE Duncan (@Willie_Duncan) is back from his summer sojourn to bring us his best bet from the first weekend of the new Scottish season with a focus on the League Cup.
Dunfermline Athletic v Cowdenbeath | Saturday 15.00
How has your pre-season been? Whatever you’ve been up to, I’m happy to offer you a wager that it has been quieter than mine.
Since the last ball of Season 2014/15 was kicked in Scotland, I’ve bought a flat and got married; I’m now so skint that I’ve been offered a loan by Greece.
Therefore, imagine my delight that Season 2015/16 is just around the corner – another glorious opportunity to batter the bookies and I’ve picked out what looks to be an absolute gem from the Scottish League Cup this weekend to get us started.
The standout tie of the round is at East End Park, where Dunfermline Athletic play host to Cowdenbeath and, for me, there is a standout price here as well that I just can’t resist getting stuck into.
I really do like the look of Dunfermline under the stewardship of Allan Johnston this season.
“Magic” really did live up to his nickname when he was in charge of Queen of the South, leading the Doonhamers to a League and Challenge Cup double before being rewarded with an opportunity to manage at Kilmarnock – and the former Hearts winger did a solid enough job at Rugby Park before resigning over a dispute with the Killie board.
Johnston has been given an opportunity to rebuild his reputation at Dunfermline and if last week’s impressive 4-1 demolition of Arbroath in the Petrofac Training Cup is a marker, it looks to be a chance that the 41-year-old gaffer is determined to take.
The Pars have strengthened their squad over the summer, while Cowdenbeath’s squad has, inevitably, been stripped of quality following their disastrous relegation from the Scottish Championship on the final day of last season.
These two sides will have high hopes of competing for the League One title this season but, for me, Dunfermline look far more equipped than their Fife rivals to be quaffing champagne come the end of the season and, so, it makes perfect sense to back them to come out on top this weekend too.
The 23/20 (Ladbrokes) quotes for the Pars to win Saturday’s cup clash at East End Park are supremely generous and I’ll be backing the home side to emerge victorious here.
Dunfermline Athletic at 23/20 to beat Cowdenbeath is my best bet from the Scottish football card this weekend. Thanks Ladbrokes.
