TENNIS trader Mark Stinchcombe (@markstinchcombe) returns with a look at the best bets from Day 7 at Roland Garros this Saturday.
Andrea Petkovic v Sara Errani | Saturday 10.00
This match is a repeat of last year’s quarter-final with Andrea Petkovic running out a 6-2, 6-2 winner and I like her to do the business again in a betting heat that’s been deemed a pick ’em.
Petkovic has had an up and down year, mainly due to injuries and illness but she won in Antwerp and reached the semi-finals of Charleston and Miami. It’s comforting that she’s made it through the opening rounds without any fitness problems and encouraging hearing her comment, ‘I feel like I’m playing really, really well’.
Sara Errani has dropped sets in both of her matches she was expected to comfortably win and suffered disappointing defeats in the second round of both Rome and Madrid to Christina McHale and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Errani was 1/3 to win both matches). She also lost as 1/3 to favourite to Lucie Hradecka in Charleston.
N.B. We’ll put Petkovic down at 15/16 with 888 Sport but It might be worth placing your bet with a bookmaker who voids on injury, just incase she suffers a reoccurrence of her thigh injury.
Borna Coric v Jack Sock | Saturday 13.00
I backed wonderkid Borna Coric to beat Sam Querrey in the first round and he followed it up with a great 3-2 win over Tommy Robredo. Saturday’s opponent Jack Sock upset the odds beating Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round but it was a very much a below-par Grigor.
Sock won Houston on the clay last month but it’s very much a faster surface there and he’s suffered first round exits on the European clay of Rome and Nice, as well as a second round defeat in Madrid.
I think this is potentially a big price on Coric and the only issue is exhaustion from his previous match with Robredo. However, with a whole day off to recover, I like his chances here at 7/4 at Bet365.
David Ferrer v Simone Bolelli | Saturday 13.30
The wall that is David Ferrer comes into this match having beaten Gimeno-Traver by 12 games and Lukas Lacko by 13 games. These two have met five times and Ferrer has won all five without dropping a set.
I struggle to see what Simone Bolelli can do to break down the Ferrer defence, and I think David will grind him down as he has done in all of their previous meetings. The Spaniard beat him in the second round here last year 6-2 6-3 6-2 (11 games) and I expect a similar outcome tomorrow.
